## EASTER ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Eggs are a rich source of nutrition and are very healthy for kids. But what about those coarse, brown/gray egg cartons? What if I tell you that just like eggs, even the egg cartons can make your kid healthy. Yes, those egg cartons can make your kids’ math brain healthy. Today we are going to tell you about Easter activities which you can easily create at home using those egg cartons.

### 1. Math DIY Egg carton Easter activity – Match It

#### What do we need?

• 1 empty egg carton (preferably of 6 eggs or more).
• 10 buttons/pebbles/coins/counters.
• Number Cards/ Uno cards

#### How to create and play the egg carton Easter activity?

• Step 1: Place all the buttons (or coins, pebbles etc.) inside the egg carton and close it.
• Step 2: Lay the number cards on the table (face up).
• Step 3: Next, shake the egg-carton nicely and open the lid.

Now, keep the carton on the table. In each compartment, there must be some counters. Or, none in some as well. Ask the child to count the counters in each compartment and place the matching number cards on top of it. If there is no counter in some, make him/her realize by saying ‘there is nothing in the box, and if there is nothing, it means zero, zero means nothing‘ and ask her to place the zero card on top of it.

#### Learning skills

• Hand-eye coordination
• Number recognition
• Counting
• Knowing the abstract and concrete form of numbers and counting.
• Knowing the value of zero
• Enhancement of fine motor skill

#### Variation for Toddlers and Kindergartners

Kindergarten students might have just started with recognizing numbers. In their case, simply write single digit numbers (repeat the numbers if need be).

• Use a single dice or button, shake up the carton, and ask them to say aloud and write down the number on which the dice lands.
• Use two dice or buttons and ask them to form and write down two-digit numbers from the digits on which the dice land.

### 2. Math DIY Egg carton Easter activity – Crunchy Numbers

#### What do we need?

• 1 empty egg carton (preferably of 6 eggs or more).
• 1 marker pen
• Cornflakes, crackers or any other small (and countable) edible pieces in a bowl.
• Colorful cotton balls

#### How to create and play the egg carton Easter activity?

• Step 1: Write numbers inside the various egg compartments of the carton. Now, you can either do it serially or randomly and can select any range of numbers depending on the difficulty level that you want to set for your kids.
• Step 2: Place the cotton balls inside each egg compartment thus covering all the numbers.
• Step 3: Place the bowl of edible food pieces next to the carton.

Now, call out a random color of any of the cotton balls. Let the child recognize the color and pick that color cotton ball. The number hidden under that cotton ball is now visible and ask the child to recognize it and say it out loud. If the child is correct, he/she gets to eat that many crunchy treats from the bowl. Make sure that he/she picks the edible treats one at a time and counting at the same time like 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 and so on.

#### Learning skills

• Color recognition
• Number recognition
• Counting
• Knowing the abstract and concrete form of numbers and counting.
• Enhancement of fine motor skills
• Hand-eye coordination

#### Variation for Toddlers and Kindergartners

• Use buttons or dice of two different colors, say red and blue.
• Assign 10s place to the red button and 1s to the blue one.
• Shake the carton.
• Ask the kids to identify the 10s number and the 1s number and form numbers based on where the respective button lands.
• Add more color buttons for learning and practicing 1oos, 1,000s, and further place value system.

Play this Easter activity in the evening, play dates, park, picnic or just anywhere at all. Make that hunger go away in a colorful counting way.

Now, say the two dice lands on the numbers ‘4’ and ‘6’. Ask your child to write the numbers on the sheet with the appropriate greater than sign. Feel free to use the Coco Crocodile mouth to make the math activity more fun – saying ‘Coco the hungry crocodile likes to eat bigger numbers, so place the open mouth towards the bigger number’.

#### Variation

You can introduce the equals to ‘=’ concept and symbol by writing repetitive numbers in the carton.

#### Learning skills
